The Truly Amazing Men's Camberwell Hockey Club Thirds - The Prequel

Flashback Friday

The Men’s thirds 1982,83,84 flags

The story of the Men’s thirds 2006-2019 has been written, but no one at Camberwell believes it is the end of the story. We are also reminded that the men’s thirds had a “threepeat” 1982-84 just as the men’s club was commencing it’s second “golden era” (the first being 12 SL1 flags in 22 years 1938-1959) with 5 SL1 5 flags in 9 years (only the even years of course!).

In 1982-4 the Men’s thirds (Pennant B) were a typical mix of ex state league players, solid club players and up and coming juniors.

The 3 grand final wins:

  • 1982 CHC 5 def TEM 3

  • 1983 CHC 3 def Powerhouse 1

  • 1984 CHC 3 def Yarra Valley 2

Thanks must go to Colin Imer for preserving the records for this period. A much more detailed record; player reviews, lots of photos and stats of the 3 years is available.

Note: D. Wansbrough played in the 3rds flag in 1982 and then again in 2006. Apparently, he went missing for the 24 years in between!
